What is VO2 Max and why does it matter?

VO2max
VO₂ max is the maximum (max) volume (V) of oxygen (O₂) your body can use during exercise. It reflects how efficiently your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles work together during physical activity. A higher VO₂ max is associated with better fitness, lower disease risk, and improved longevity.
A VO₂ max score is a little like horsepower in a car. It’s a measure of the capacity of oxygen your body (engine) has the potential to use when exercising. The higher your VO₂ max, the bigger and more efficient your “engine” is for sustaining activity and performance.
Your VO₂ max is determined by three main components:

  • Lung capacity and heart volume:

The amount of oxygen your lungs can take in and the volume of oxygen-rich blood your heart can pump to the body.

  • Capillary delivery:

How effectively your circulatory system transports oxygenated blood to the working muscles.

  • Muscle efficiency:

The ability of your muscle cells to extract and use oxygen from the blood for energy production.
To measure VO₂ max directly, a special mask and gas analysis machine are used during graded exercise testing. This determines how much oxygen you inhale versus how much you exhale, providing a precise measure of your body’s oxygen utilisation.

VO2 Max

VO₂ max plays a vital role not just in athletic

performance but also in everyday health.

So why does VO2max matter to me?

  • VO₂ max plays a vital role not just in athletic performance but also in everyday health. The ability of your body to absorb and use oxygen efficiently affects nearly every system in your body, from your heart and lungs to your muscles and even your mental well-being.
  • For athletes, a higher VO₂ max translates directly to improved endurance, allowing them to exercise longer, recover faster, and perform at higher intensities with less fatigue. It means your muscles can sustain activity for extended periods because they are being well-supplied with oxygen, which is essential for producing aerobic energy from carbohydrates and fats.

VO₂ max isn’t just for sports:
It’s a powerful indicator of overall health. A stronger aerobic system reduces stress on the heart and promotes better circulation, which lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. The heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood, while cholesterol levels and blood pressure are more likely to remain in healthy ranges.
A good VO₂ max score is also linked to a reduced risk of chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Aerobic fitness enhances the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity, which can help prevent or manage metabolic conditions. On top of that, a well-developed VO₂ max aids in weight management. When your body uses oxygen more effectively, it burns calories more efficiently, supporting fat loss and maintenance of a healthy, functional weight.

VO2 Max

Beyond the physical, aerobic exercise releases feel-good chemicals in the brain called endorphins, boosting mood, reducing stress, and improving sleep quality. So not only does a high VO₂ max enhance physical performance and health, but it also supports mental and emotional well-being.

In short, improving your VO₂ max means building a body that works better,
lasts longer, and feels stronger, whether you’re running marathons,
playing with your kids, or simply climbing the stairs with ease.
