VO₂ Max and Walk Test

The VO₂ Max Walk Test is a graded, incremental treadmill walking test. This method is ideal for clinical populations, sedentary individuals, or those who may not tolerate higher-intensity protocols.
What Is It?
The metabolic cart will analyse exhaled gases during exercise to directly measure VO₂ max—the gold standard for assessing cardiorespiratory fitness.
Walking VO₂ max protocols gradually increase intensity via treadmill incline rather than speed, keeping the subject walking (not running), and providing a maximal effort
Key Benefits of Walking VO₂ Max Testing
- • Safe for broader populations (elderly, clinical, overweight)
- • Reduces orthopedic stress vs. running protocols
- • Highly accurate when paired with a metabolic cart
- • Suitable for both fitness and health assessments
Key Variables assessed and measured:
- • VO₂ (ml/kg/min) – oxygen consumption
- • VCO₂ – carbon dioxide output
- • RER – respiratory exchange ratio
- • Ventilation (VE) – breathing rate and volume
- • HR – heart rate
- • Anaerobic threshold - exercise intensity at which your body starts to accumulate lactic acid in the bloodstream faster than it can be cleared
Health and Performance Applications
- • Assess cardiovascular fitness safely in older or sedentary adults
- • Baseline data for lifestyle or rehabilitation interventions
- • Detect abnormal cardiorespiratory responses (e.g. in long COVID, heart failure)
- • Track progress in return-to-fitness journeys

Physiotherapist Treatment – Dublin 15 and Dublin 24
At a Physiotherapy appointment in our Castleknock, Blanchardstown or Tallaght clinic, treatment will include manual therapy to the soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. Manual therapy can include stretching, massage, manipulation, dry needling and myofascial release.
Physiotherapy can help give pain relief in most cases but often it depends upon the individual and the longevity of the injury or problem. The rate of healing is different for different individuals. The duration of your treatment plan depends upon variations in pain, motivation, perception, and the healing rate of the individual.
