Returning to your chosen sport after injury:

Our sports and injury clinics in Dublin boast the best equipment needed to guide you back to your sport. You can rest assured that your therapist will guide you through every aspect of your rehab journey. The use of any gym equipment will be fully demonstrated and you will be coached through each component of your rehab programme.

At Somerton Physio we have implemented a 4-step treatment pathway to ensure a swift return to your sport in a timely and safe manner. Pathway components include:

  • Functional testing:

This is an aspect of sports and exercise medicine that is crucial in allowing your therapist to assess your current ability. Functional testing is where we look at specific tasks and compare your injured side to your unaffected side. Most up to date research and evidence tells us that passing functional testing can reduce your risk of re-injury when you return to your chose sport.

  • Digital Dynamometry:

This is how we compare the strength of one joint/muscle to another. Our state-of-the-art digital dynamometer accurately records your strength in kilograms, thus showing any deficits in muscle strength.

By providing the ability to make precise measurements of muscle strength, the digital dynamometer allows us to assess and monitor ongoing progress. It allows us to give more accurate feedback, enabling us to provide more scientific and meticulous patient care and tailored rehab.

Extensive research into injury prevention and recovery from injuries such as ACL rupture and tendinopathy has shown the importance of limb symmetry. This is yet another expert toul we can offer you in your journey towards full recovery.

  • Plyometric testing:

Plyometrics is the development of power through muscles relaxing and contracting at a rapid pace. Plyometric training builds your muscles ability to generate force and power. When testing plyometrics we use a series of well documented tests, these give your therapist reliable data on your readiness to return to your sport.

  • Sport simulation:

As simple as it sounds, sports simulation is based on your specific sport. Your therapist will use various techniques to emulate the rigors and demands of your sport. High speed running, twisting and turning, cutting, hopping, jumping for a high ball while being opposed, the list is endless. This is the final stage of your rehabilitation and you will start to feel ever closer to your goal of getting back to your sport or activity.

Throughout the 4-step treatment pathway your therapist may use manual therapy techniques to enhance your recovery and return to play. These techniques can include massage, joint mobilisations, joint manipulation, stretching, trigger point therapy and dry needling.
